2016 Colour Trend: Youthful Yellow
Australians spent the last year decorating with copper, bronze and combining gold accents with navy and marble.
Now the experts are predicting that while gold will remain, it’s a brighter hue that will take the reigns of this sunkissed trend – yellow!
Yellow is often seen as a playful colour reserved for children’s bedrooms, classrooms or even nurseries. However, we’re now seeing it placed in kitchens and other living spaces. Some home offices and commercial workplaces are also injecting a yellow burst for it’s psychological ability to energise (more on that later).
I recently spoke to my friend and colleague Milou Ket, international trend forecaster who highlighted this in her 2016/17 interiors forecast.
“Yellow remains a trend colour and will be often combined with grey, black or white,” she said.
Of the exact colours: “Ochre and mustard are the most fashionable interpretations, they create warmth and present a more traditional aesthetic.”
Milou also predicts that gold, rose gold and copper accents will remain for their ability to add glamour and luxury.
Now for those opposed to gold, Milou recommends a matte mustard for the same effect.
For the bright enthusiasts, there are some bold and playful colour combinations coming through such as yellow and its primary colour counterparts, red and blue.
However, softer hues are not to be forgotten – think lemon sorbet and yellow undertones with grey pairings. Yellow united with green or wooden/earthy textures can again tone down the vibrancy and give a nod to nature.
The colour is also brave enough to stand alone so don’t dismiss yellow furniture, feature doors, wallpaper and rugs.
