2016 Pantone Colour of The Year
Following a year of deep and earthy Marsala hues, Pantone has lightened its colour palette to reveal not one but two shades for the 2016 Colour of They Year.
Announcing: Rose Quartz (PANTONE 13-1520) and Serenity (PANTONE 15-3919)
“As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent,” reads PANTONE® statement on their website.
“Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.

Furthermore, the company reveal that the combined colours reflect a global movement towards equality – a symbol of an accepting world which gives people and the planet non-conforming immunity to flourish.
“In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design,” the company stated. “This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”
PANTONE also beautifully defined the two hues:
Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure.
Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.

Official colour pairings can be found on their website here.
In my own research, I have also been tracking “Rose Quartz” and similar colours that I’ve referred to as ballerina or pastel pink or watermelon gelato. Serenity beautifully complements and brings a sprinkle of richness that will also allow us to explore violet and lavender.
Personally, I think the selection is wonderful!
